Section Info:
This course will examine a selection of very well-known Shakespearean plays—plays that are often read, taught, reinterpreted, and performed today and that by any measure are (still) among the best known literary texts in the contemporary world. Focusing on a small handful of plays gives us ample time to explore each play in detail, and we will also have time to examine issues relating to performance and adaptation and to other related topics as student interest leads us. A series of short written assignments are meant to foster practical curiosity by introducing students to different ways of engaging critically with the Shakespearean text: as a piece of literature, a historical document, a script for performance, and/or a site of cultural reinvention.
