Comics and Graphic Narratives -This course will survey a wide variety of comics, sampling from their long history, over a range or genres, styles, and types. We'll tackle some big questions about comics as we go. How did they get longer and more developed, producing graphic novels and corporate comics continuities? Why are two of the most prominent genres these days superhero narratives and memoirs? What happens when comics and other art forms--prose literature, film--intersect? And what can comics do, politically, socially, personally? Over the course of the semester, you will learn the formal vocabulary of comics and practice the interpretation of comics at a variety of scales. Assignments will include responses, analyses, and some creative work.
