Spring 2017 FR 552 An introductory survey of contemporary French and Francophone women directors. Particular focus on the gendered gaze and film form. Study of film genre, theory, and themes (sexuality, coming of age, parenting, cinécriture) in select mainstream and experimental films, in order to imagine a feminine aesthetic in editing, camera work, and narrative art. Readings by Mulvey, Fliterman-Lewis, De Lauretis, Silverman, Tarr, and others. Films and writings by G. Dulac, M. Epstein, A. Varda, D. Kurys, C. Denis, C. Akerman, M. Duras, C. Serreau, C. Breillat, A. Jaoui, C. Sciamma.
