"UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS HIP HOP COLLECTIVE." Open to all instrumentalists, rappers, vocalists, DJs, emcees, beatboxers, writers, dancers, videographers, audio engineers, producers, etc. wishing to collaborate on live shows, podcasts, and videos presenting hip hop and related genres (R&B, dubstep, trip hop, trap, EDM, etc). Course features large and small ensembles, involving in-depth study of styles, extended instrumental techniques, electronic media, historical/social contexts of musical genres, and engagement with communities on and off campus (schools/artists/venues & community/campus organizations). Class times and locations to be arranged. Open with permission of instructor for all students (major, non-major, graduate, undergraduate). This course provides the opportunity to experience service learning through mentoring incoming freshmen enrolled in the School of Music. Through meetings with mentees, class discussion, guest lectures, reflective journal writing, and study of current research and practice in the areas of mentoring and mentor training, students will develop important leadership skills while positively contributing to the growth and success of their colleagues. Includes limited voluntary participation as a subject in research activities. "James Scholars should contact the College Office and complete a petition requesting Service Learning Credit for completion of this course."

Singing in Musical Theatre
Section Info:
This highly participatory class surveys both classic and contemporary styles of musical theatre repertoire and is appropriate for all levels of singing experience and ability. Methods of instruction include daily warm ups, vocal exercises, song memorization, and performances. There will be a great deal of feedback from the instructor.

The course is designed for former mentors from the School of Music Mentoring program. These returning mentors serve as peer advisors to new mentors. Course content includes bi-weekly meetings with the assigned mentor, collaboratively planning and completing two community-based volunteer activities with the mentor and his/her mentee, and planning/attending cultural and social events with mentors and mentees. Enrolled students will also participate in one community-based volunteer event with all peer advisors, mentors, and mentees.
