Undergraduate section. This course surveys trends in modern and contemporary art from 1940 to the present. We will examine the ways in which artists responded to World War II, the rise of consumer culture, the Cold War, feminism, the Civil Rights movement, the fall of the Berlin Wall, globalization, and the war on terror. Through close reading of key artworks and critical texts, we will develop a framework for understanding art of this historical period, as well as a foundation for participating in contemporary art.
