Topic: Sacred Arts of Africa. Why are some artworks endowed with mythic power, so that they become living form? What issues and narratives lie behind the surface of powerful religious icons? This course explores these and related questions from the vantage point of the African experience. We will learn to see beyond the surface of things, to understand how a wide range of African visual practices, including architecture, painting, sculpture, graphic communication systems -- and even contemporary multi-media art installations -- all work to manifest changing notions of the sacred on the African continent and in the African Diaspora.
