Section Title:
Art, Society, Ecology
Section Info:
Topic: Art, Society, Ecology. This course considers several different kinds of artistic objects from China and Japan, focusing on the methods of their manufacture and the sustainability of these methods. The objects we study include paper, ancient Chinese ritual bronzes, and sixteenth-century Japanese wood-fired ceramics. In addition to determining the sustainability of their manufacture, we examine the place these objects held in the society that produced them, analyzing how their value may be related to the high or low sustainability of the methods used to make them. During the first part of the semester, we shall read, research, and write about the concept and practice of sustainability. During the last part of the course, in preparation for the final project of the term -- the design of a sustainable garden in a Chinese style that suits the environment of Urbana-Champaign -- we examine Chinese and Japanese conceptions of nature, comparing them with those exhibited in Euro-American nature writing. In this context, we also study earthworks and land art, performance and "social practice" art, that is motivated by ecological concerns, exploring how artists in Europe, the United States, and East Asia have addressed environmental issues during the past 50 years.
