Seminar in Medieval Literature

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 4 hours.

Intensive study of selected texts, genres, themes, or theoretical issues in medieval British literature (usually focusing on either Old English or Middle English texts), or of scholarly methods in medieval studies (such as editing, paleography, or bibliography and methods of historical research).

Same as MDVL 514. May be repeated if topics vary. Prerequisite: A college course devoted entirely to an aspect of medieval studies or consent of instructor.

You will learn about the primary materials and research tools that medievalists use, and the methods and assumptions that enable various historical approaches to medieval texts and cultural artifacts. You will learn how to use the major reference guides, encyclopedias, bibliographies, and electronic databases in order to access medieval historical sources, literary texts, and artistic monuments and to locate the relevant scholarly literature. Representative topics include ecclesiastical history, medieval Latin literature, liturgy, hagiography, biblical exegesis, folklore and popular culture, sciences and encyclopedias, and iconography. Basic reading knowledge of Latin is required. Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
