Section Info:
We’ll read novels and poetry from the period 1789-1832. Our first goal will be to understand the special literary pleasures of this period — an era of revolution that emphasized the thrills and terrors of individualism. But we’ll also consider a longer historical perspective, asking how the legacy of the Romantic era continues to shape our ideas about literature, about culture, and about imagination itself. Texts will include poems by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, and Byron, fiction by Austen, Shelley, and Gaiman, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s surprisingly romantic manifesto “On Fairy-Stories.” Two essays, two exams, and regular informal writing.
