This course will examine a host of ways that aspiring tech entrepreneurs might cobble together enough cash to make their ideas come to life. The course will explore the difference between Equity (ownership), Non-Dilutive (grants) and Strategic (customer) funding sources. The course will follow this chronological progression of an early-stage venture and cover likely funding sources at each stage. In addition, we will cover company valuation, investment terms and potential pitfalls using real-world examples and speakers to illustrate the concepts.

Honduras Water Project: Real-World Design- Two-semester course (Fa15 and Sp16) to assist a rural Honduran community in designing and implementing a holistic water system. You will work closely with professional mentors on every stage of the project and have the opportunity to travel to Honduras during Spring Break 2016. Open to graduate students in all majors. Social Justice & STEM Educ
Section Info:
In this service-learning course, students engage with diverse middle school students from Chicago Public Schools as part of the ICANEXCEL (Illinois-ChiS&E Alliance for Nurturing Excellence in STEM Education and Leadership) program. The outreach program includes hands-on activities, experiments, and engaging math and science lessons and will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Students must be available to facilitate a series of Saturday sessions (transportation to/from Chicago will be provided). The course includes exploration of topics related to social justice and engineering, the impact of racial and ethnic disparities in STEM education and the workforce, effective teaching techniques, community outreach, and positive youth development. Restricted to students in the Engineering for Social Justice Scholars Program.
