Topic Title "Encounters" The course will focus primarily on encounters between indigenous and Iberian peoples that formed the foundations of colonial Latin American society. We will pay special attention to the ways that historical actors attempted to understand, represent, and shape a ?new? cultural world marked by contact and conflict. By analyzing rhetorical and narrative strategies deployed in texts from the time, this course challenges static dichotomies of native/foreign, conqueror/conquered, colonizer/colonized to reveal the multiple meanings of the colonial project. We will also engage with contemporary critiques of colonialism to explore the echoes and enduring complexities of these encounters in the Latin American context. Students must meet the prerequisite requirements for this course (found in the Catalog Entry) or will be told to drop on the first day of classes. Non-registered students are not allowed to sit in or audit.
