The art, techniques, sociology, politcis of French cinema in the context of French culture, world history, and general film development from approximately 1950 to the present. Selected trends studied through films from several countries with stress on major French filmmakers such as Clouzot, Bresson, Chabrol, Resnais, Godard, Truffaut, Varda, Marker, Rohmer, Beineix, Kassovitz, and Assayas. Knowledge of French not required.

Same as CWL 389, HUM 389, and MACS 383. Credit is not given for both FR 389 and FR 489. Prerequisite: One college-level Media or Media and Cinema Studies course or consent of instructor.

FR 389 - French and Comparative Cinema II: 1950-present. Semester two of a survey of French cinema in a comparative context, beginning with the films of the nouvelle vague and their contemporaries and continuing to the present. The class format will be lecture/discussion with special emphasis placed on in-depth analysis (decoupage and deconstruction) of selected films and their placement within historical , social, political, aesthetic, and technical contexts. Cross listed with CWL 389, HUM 389 and MACS 383.
