Title: Race, Immigration snd Urban Cultures in Contemporary France This undergraduate course explores the rich cultures and histories of France's post-colonial (im)migrant populations of the last several decades, primarily from North and West Africa and the Caribbean. We will take up the question of how race/racism, the (im)migration experience and the continually evolving political climate have shaped recent French cultural production. Examples will be drawn from the literature of second-generation immigrant youth, film, (both popular and documentary, music, including Hip Hop, Reggae and rai, amd much more.
