Each team of students will work in a consultative relationship with real businesses and organizations to solve real problems by developing implementable solutions. The instructor's expectation is that the student consultants will provide professional quality work. Our students form teams that work directly with a business client for 12 weeks of the semester on a project jointly defined by the client and the team. Team Leaders are selected by the instructor after evaluating the applicants' work experience, leadership experience, and other qualities.

Operations Strategy
Section Info:
Operations strategy examines how manufacturing or operations in general can be used as sources of competitive advantage. Some firms compete based on innovative and high-performing products. Others may rely on rapid delivery, flexibility to accommodate specific customer needs, or cost leadership. The capabilities that allow the pursuit of these strategies are usually the result of well formulated and executed operations strategies. This course illuminates the fundamental underlying drivers that make the pursuit of these and other strategies possible and/or desirable within different contexts. The course uses cutting edge theory as well as business cases that illustrate the theoretical concepts. We will meet once a week for an evening of stimulating discussion that links together and deepens the understanding of concepts learned in core Competitive Strategy and Operations/Process Management classes.

Section Title:
Power & Leadership in Orgs.
Section Info:
Organizations are political systems and leadership is, among other things, a deeply political task. As people try to ascend through organizational hierarchies they inevitably confront political dynamics and come face to face with the realities of power. Those who are fortunate enough to achieve positions of authority are ultimately confronted with the problem of using power. This task, which involves numerous practical, ethical, and personal challenges, can be even more demanding than the task of attaining power in the first place. This course has two basic and interrelated purposes. The first is to help students better understand power in organizations and to become more effective political actors in their professional careers. The second is to explore the nature of the outwardly similar but less tangible thing called leadership, and to carefully consider its relationship to power itself. In pursuing this latter objective, we will address important normative questions about power's legitimate purposes and the ethical constraints which should govern its use. We will also consider how the pursuit and attainment of power can affect people. Leadership, as we shall come to see in the course of the class, is an inherently ethical and personal concept. The course attempts to do justice to these aspects of the phenomenon at the same time that it explores complicating political realities. It is about power AND leadership. This means both realism and idealism, both "getting things done" and "doing the right thing." The design of the course is generally similar to my MBA 502 OTD course. We will read a large number of cases and attempt to learn from the experiences of many successful (and failed) organizational politicians/leaders. We will also draw upon a large body of popular management literature and social scientific research which has directly addressed the phenomena of power and leadership in and around organizations. The course will be highly interactive and discussion-based. Grading procedures and expectations will also be similar to those used in OTD.

Program Management
Section Info:
Meets with MBA 505 PM. This course provides a socio-technical perspective, as opposed to a planning-and-control perspective, to the management of projects. As such, the course can be thought of either as a complement to a project management course (e.g., MBA 505 or BADM 589) or as a complement to organizations and management courses. Program management is becoming more important in today's world where, more and more companies are realizing that managing complex and interrelated projects is a vital part of every organization's success. Accordingly, in this course, the science of project management will be covered from a socio-technical perspective, which is a perspective that focuses on the importance of technical skills along with the skills needed for becoming an effective project manager who can form and lead a successful project team. Additionally, the course will focus on project portfolio management by focusing on how to become an effective program manager. In this context, the distinction between program management and project management is that projects deliver outputs whereas programs deliver outcomes; as such, program management is concerned with doing the right projects whereas project management is concerned with doing projects right. The course begins with an introduction to projects and the project management process with an emphasis on planning, and examining how managers plan, budget, schedule and control multi-project programs within an organizational context. Topics include project life cycles, organization and charters, work breakdown structures, responsibility matrixes; as well as the role of projects in organizations, alternative organizational systems, team management and leadership, and change management. The importance of project teams and human resource management in the process also is addressed. The art and science of project and program management process will be learnt through class activities, lectures, textbook, articles and/or handouts. The class assignments include weekly readings, in-class and outside-class related activities.

Managing Prof Service Firms
Section Info:
Professional service firms are a critical part of the global economy. How these firms address the economic, social and technical challenges and provide solutions to their clients' needs play an increasingly important role in today's world. The objective of the course is to understand how these firms are organized, how they manage their human capital, and fulfill their clients' expectations. We will first develop an understanding of what makes professional service firms successful and how they develop and sustain their competitive advantage. Second, we will focus on their unique human capital processes that are critical in executing their strategies by paying special attention to the ways these firms develop professional talents and motivate them to deliver superior client service. Third, we will have the opportunity to bring some of our graduates from these firms to explore how they have leveraged their skills and competencies to develop their careers and to learn from their experiences.
