Section Info:
This course takes as its springboard the historical period of the mid-eighteenth century, specifically the commedia dell?arte practices of the playwrights Carlo Gozzi and Carlo Goldoni. Following an introduction to the theatrical world of commedia dell?arte, and a consideration of its social and political dimensions, we will examine closely operas such as Haydn?s Il mondo della luna and Mozart?s Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. Mozart?s mixed genre operas invite us to consider the meaningful intersection of comedy and tragedy. Comic operas by Rossini and Verdi warrant close study for their commedia roots as do early twentieth century modernist works. As a class and in groups we will examine Strauss?s Ariadne auf Naxos and Prokofiev?s The Love for Three Oranges in detail.
Restriction(s):
