Section Info:
The course traces the birth and evolution of Rock and Pop music genres in relation to the development of the artist and trends in American popular music introduced throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. In addition, the course will require students to discuss and elaborate on the advancement of musical style and its relationship to the political and social landscape of twentieth century American pop culture. The course aims at introducing students to keyboard masterpieces from the baroque to the 20th century. In addition to listening, discussing, and analyzing selected piano works, students will also have the opportunity to study and perform representative beginning to early advanced piano pieces in both acoustic and electronic piano laboratory settings. An introduction to the use of computer technology in music and to the way scientific ideas and mathematical tools are applied in the creation of new musical compositions. The course offers an insight in the field of Computer Music by giving the students the opportunity to work hands-on in a major Computer Music laboratory and shows ways in which the development of technology is facilitating the process of globalization. The students will have an opportunity to become familiar with music created during the last 60 years and, at the same time, work on a collective musical project using technology. This course provides the opportunity to experience service learning through mentoring incoming freshmen enrolled in the School of Music. Through meetings with mentees, class discussion, guest lectures, reflective journal writing, and study of current research and practice in the areas of mentoring and mentor training, students will develop important leadership skills while positively contributing to the growth and success of their colleagues. Includes limited voluntary participation as a subject in research activities. Title: Opera Crew Call I Description: Experience in backstage support of the UI Opera program production. Note: Approximately 65 hours over 12-13 days of internship experience at KCPA will be required; class will most often be in the evening, and may last until 11pm. Section Info:
The course is designed for former mentors from the School of Music Mentoring program. These returning mentors serve as peer advisors to new mentors. Course content includes bi-weekly meetings with the assigned mentor, collaboratively planning and completing two community-based volunteer activities with the mentor and his/her mentee, and planning/attending cultural and social events with mentors and mentees. Enrolled students will also participate in one community-based volunteer event with all peer advisors, mentors, and mentees.
