Examination of the social context, function and meaning of music/music-making in one or more communities, from one or more areas of the world, in one or more time periods. May address music in relation to such social issues as gender, ethnicity, politics, etc.

May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, and junior standing in music; or consent of instructor.

TOPIC: CLASSICAL MUSIC IN AMERICAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY - An exploration of how Americans have adapted, imported, and reshaped the genres and styles of European art music as a means of uniquely New-World artistic expression. Topics will include the music of Moravian communities, American Romanticists, the establishing of orchestras and opera companies in the United States, touring virtuosi and the American audience for art music, the contribution of European emigrants and refugees to the American scene, the international dissemination of American music.
