Intensive study of a period or school of opera composition or of a particular aspect of the history of opera. Wide reading in the social and intellectual climate of the period concerned; literary, dramatic, and musical analysis; and work with primary sources, whenever possible.

(Summer session, 2 hours). May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528A (consult Class Schedule for specific section information), graduate standing in musicology, or consent of instructor.
