TOPIC: Contemporary Music Listening The focus here will be primarily on listening to a large amount of contemporary music (most of it from the past c.60 years), with supportive discussion of the theoretical, philosophical, and technical elements. The repertoire is intended to be mostly works that are not covered in 408E (Form & Analysis of Works Since World War II). It would be beneficial, but is not required, to have taken 408E or a course like it already. The emphasis on listening will reduce, but not eliminate the analysis component. The purpose of the course is to expand each student's familiarity with a large and diverse body of work, and to pursue the details of these works in papers and in some cases compositions (for composers, anyway). In addition to weekly assignments: students will be expected to produce a final written analysis project, or a combination of a short composition with a paper, and all students will make an in-class presentation of their final project.
