How and why does the University operate, and why should you care? This course takes a critical look at what higher education in America is all about, with special attention to the U of I. We'll watch films such as the Paper Chase, Animal House, Declining by Degrees, Blue Chips, Higher Learning, and Big Time Losers to explore campus issues that include: Who gets to go to college? Why is the U of I such a highly regarded university? Why are faculty here? What do they do other than teach, and how important is this other stuff to the University's reputation? Why is diversity important? What happens to students in college? Does the student culture support the University?s educational vision? Should the university play a parental role in students' lives? Why do we pay so much attention to sports? For a more in-depth description of this course go to https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/hschein/www/.
