Topic: Modernisms/ Modernismo / Modernity. An examination of the major critical writings and historiography of the concepts of modernism and modernity within visual arts discourses of the Americas and Western Europe. Readings will include writings by the most significant theoreticians from the nineteenth century through more contemporary reconfigurations (i.e., from Baudelaire through Habermas, Burger, Vattimo, Huyssen and Jameson to name a few). While seminar participants will be able to investigate writings, objects and monuments from across a range of cultures in the modern period, the course’s lectures will focus on Spanish and Latin American examples.
