Investigating theAncient World TOPIC: Historical and Scientific Investigations of the Ancient World. Careful analysis of written sources and scientific investigations of archaeological materials are both critical to understanding the ancient world. This seminar investigates a number of areas where the integration of these two methods is shedding new light on past societies and their environments: water supply, trade & economy, migration, diet and environment & climate. Evaluation of both kinds of evidence by non-specialists, an important skill in modern interdisciplinary research contexts, will be investigated. Examples will be primarily drawn from Roman Italy, but also from the Maya, Pharaonic Egypt, the Silk Road, South-east Asia, and Australia.
