Topic: Teaching and Learning Algebra in Middle School and High School. Algebra I has been described as a critical filter for pursuing further studies in mathematics. The course considers the introduction to algebraic concepts in middle school and the teaching and learning of algebra in high school. Course topics include and examination of historical perspectives on algebra in the school curriculum, a study of the nature of algebra and algebraic thinking, an analysis of teaching strategies for teaching algebra, an examination of recent documents by NCTM on algebraic reasoning, and explorations of the use of technological tools to support the teaching and learning of algebra.
