Topic: Participatory Art. This class is framed by recent debates about "relational aesthetics" and the efficacy of contemporary political art, particularly art that demands spectator participation. Focusing on the social aspects of participation, we will consider international art practices from the late 1950s until the present that seek to activate the viewer, often through physical engagement. Authors and artists to be considered include: Paulo Freire, Roland Barthes, John Cage, Yoko Ono, Umberto Eco, Guy Debord, Allan Kaprow, Helio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, Joseph Beuys, Andrea Fraser, Nicholas Bourriaud, Claire Bishop, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Jacques Ranciere.

Topic: Issues in Art Writing. This course introduces students to the history and practice of writing about modern and contemporary art. Beginning with examples of historical criticism, we will then investigate more recent discussions around modern art, analyzing contemporary criticism's numerous forms in relation to its diverse venues (newspapers, magazines, and monographs, among other sites) and audiences. While reading comprises a significant portion of our curriculum, students will also regularly generate their own writings based on responses to objects in The Phillips Collection as well as to exhibitions in other museums, galleries, and collections in Washington and New York to be visited during the semester. Instructor: Dr. Suzanne Hudson. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Course meets in Carriage House Conference Room, The Phillips Collection. Graduate Section. Undergraduates register for ARTH 491.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
