Topic: Cultures of Colonialism. In this course, I hope to consider various issues that pertain to colonialist ventures. These ventures have manifested themselves as military expeditions and as academic institutions, both in the activity of translation and in the activity of making films. We shall discuss theoretical writings about colonialism, especially those by Dipesh Chakrabarty and Lydia Liu. But we shall also want to consider primary documents such as travel writings, films, and exhibition catalogues. The focus of this seminar will be China.
