Topic: This course investigates the art of illustration, focusing primarily on American imagery from the first half of the twentieth century, especially the work of Norman Rockwell. A recurring question will no doubt be whether the illustrator who defined the Saturday Evening Post's vision of American culture from 1916 to 1963 should be understood as Artist or mass media huckster. But our investigation will push beyond this hackneyed refrain to consider Rockwell's art in relation to the photojournalism of Life magazine, for example, the hokey Victorianism of Preston Sturges's films, technological developments, and the twentieth century's "invention of tradition." The ultimate question will be whether our investigation can move beyond even these familiar themes. What would be a fresh perspective on Rockwell and the art of illustration? Why does Rockwell continue to be such a polarizing figure in intellectual discourse? What is the nature of his modernism? Some class meetings will be devoted to the screening of films and others to firsthand study of illustration in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
