Intensive historical and analytical study of the works of important composers; each term devoted to one composer.

(Summer session, 2 or 4 graduate hours.) May be repeated to a maximum of 16. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314; two of the following: MUS 410, MUS 411, MUS 412, MUS 413, MUS 414, or MUS 415, or equivalent.

George Frederic Handel (H. Schulze) A survey of the life and work of George Frederic Handel, in particular investigating, in his later compositions, the use of stylistic elements that Handel had adopted during his stay in Italy 1706-1709. Participants are expected to write and present an extensive research paper, to contribute to group assignments, and to actively participate in class discussions.
