TOPIC: MUSIC AND DEATH Songs and Dances of Death. Death and Transfiguration. Death and the Maiden. Pavane for a Dead Princess. Dido�s Lament. Isle of the Dead. Mahler�s Kindentotenlieder. Schubert�s Erlk�nig. Countless requiems, from Mozart to Verdi. Whether as dramatic device, commemorative vehicle, grief-stricken expression, artistic inspiration, or personal vision, few topics have intrigued composers of art music in the Euro-American tradition more than death and dying. Indeed, musical practices play a critical role in death, mourning, and mortuary rites and customs throughout the world, yet with the possible exception of lament, these activities have only occasionally been the focus of scholarly attention. Drawing upon literature from anthropology, folklore, ethnomusicology, historical musicology, psychology, and neuroscience, this graduate ethnomusicology seminar looks cross-culturally at the experience of death and how that experience is rendered, signified, mediated, managed, memorialized, and defied musically. Course topics may include music in dramas of disposal, music and the politics of death, sonic visions of death and dying, musical commemorations and remembrances, lamentation, and the musical poetics of grief, loss, and abandonment, among others. Students will be expected to read widely and to conduct an original research project leading to a substantive semester paper.

MUSIC AND RELIGION The seminar will investigate the impact of religious practices in the broadest sense on the composition, transmission and performance of music. Readings will be drawn from texts on liturgy, theology, social history and folklore in addition to musicological studies. Students may choose specific topics for discussion within the parameters of the course.
