A survey of the materials science of hard matter intended for students whose background has been in other areas of science and engineering, including soft matter and biomaterials. Electronic properties of atoms, molecules, and solids including the Schrodinger equation, free and nearly-free electron gas model, electrons in periodic potentials, band structure, crystallography and structure of perfect solids, structure of imperfect solids, thermodynamics of nucleation and growth, binary phase diagrams, invariant reactions, kinetic processes and diffusion with simple boundary conditions, time-temperature-transformation analysis, electrical properties and simple devices. Credit is not given to students who have a BS degree in Materials Science and Engineering unless approved by the Department.
