Presentation of (i) cutting-edge materials research given by visiting lectures from academia as well as national and industrial research laboratories and (ii) some of the current research conducted in the Department. Students meet with visitors for questions and discussion. Required of all graduate students in the department during their first two years.

Approved for both letter and S/U grading. May be repeated. A maximum of 2 hours of MSE 590 may count toward the MatSE M.S. degree; likewise 4 hours for the MatSE Ph.D. degree.
