M523 Studies in American Musical Theater Through most of the twentieth century, musical theater stood at the center of American culture, offering songs and stories that aimed to represent shared experience and reflect unresolved social issues, sometimes through comedy. This course explores the history and historiography of American musical theater with special focus on a few key shows in its most fertile period, ca. 1920-80, and on a plethora of recent studies that make it a rich interdisciplinary subject linking musicology, dramatic theory and criticism, cultural studies, and American history. The course aims to develop a balanced focus on music, lyrics, dramatic context, and the broad range of dramatic and social issues that directly or indirectly emerge in the shows and the literature about them. A variety of assignments will determine the grade, including reading reports, discussions, oral presentations, and an extensive final research paper.
