From Hitchcock to Harry Potter: Music in British Heritage Films 3 credit hours All of the Harry Potter films, along with other current films such as Becoming Jane (2007) and Pride and Prejudice (2005), reconnect with one of the oldest film genres: the British heritage film. This course looks at the use of music in British heritage films from the 1930s to the present. Our particular focus will be the intersections of musical soundtracks with other contemporary film trends and genres through the century. Films covered include Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940); David Lean's Bridge on the River Kwai (1957); Disney's animated 101 Dalmatians (1961); A Room With a View (1986) and Howard's End (1992), created by the Merchant-Ivory company; Jane Austen adaptations including Emma and Sense and Sensibility (both 1996); and the five Harry Potter films. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.

A WORLD VIEW OF CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITION. Erik Lund, Associate Professor of Music Composition-Theory 2 hour credit A look at and listen to important contributions in contemporary art music of the past 50-100 years, drawing on international contributions, primarily from the United States, and countries in Europe and Asia. The integration, fusion, and juxtaposition of diverse national and cultural sources, has lead to powerful and meaningful results from composers and musicians around the world. The focus will begin with experimental composition and performance practices, however, jazz, rock, popular music, electronic and computer music, and improvisation will be included. The class will also function as a composition workshop, where the ideas, techniques, and approaches studied in the music of others will serve as models for student compositions, which we will listen to and discuss as part of the class. The ability to read and write music at at least an introductory level is strongly preferred. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
