Alternative Sports, Inside and Out, 3 hours. In this course, students will study the history and anthropology of new action sports such as sky surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and extreme endurance races that have gained popularity throughout the world over the past twenty years. Throughout the semester, students will explore theories and critiques of globalization focused on sport ritual and performance, and will be introduced to classic and important recent works in cultural studies related to the study of the nature of human play, sacrifice and competition. First Year Discovery Course. Registeration restricted to freshman. Studnets should enroll in only one Discovery course.
