Literary, thematic, cultural, and bibliographical analysis of the major authors, works, genres, and movements in German literature from 1830 to 1920.

Prerequisite: GER 332 or equivalent.

	45905	Lecture-Discussion	F	1:00PM -2:20PM	TR	310 David Kinley Hall	Niekerk, C	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/16/07-05/02/07 Section Info: Seminar in the literature and culture of the nineteenth century after 1832 and the early twentieth century until the end of World War One (1918); introduction to literary and cultural history that inludes some philosophy, visual arts, and music. We will investigate ways in which German intellectuals understood and represented worlds both real (with events such as the Industrial Revolution, the revolutions of 1848, the imperial period, and the First World War) and ideal. In addition to close readings of literary texts, during which we will concentrate on themes such as technology, nationalism, gender, ethnic diversity, the environmental movement, and the birth of pyschoanalysis, we will also investigate the culture debate and how German intellectuals conceived of themselves in society and German cultural history. We will conduct our readings and discussions primarily in German. Texts for this class include: B�chner, Heine, Grillparzer, Keller, Fontane, Wagner, Nietzsche, Wedekind, Schnitzler, Hesse, and Kafka.
