Exploration of German-language literature, history, and culture from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Although the focus is on literature, the course has an interdisciplinary component--we will consider questions pertinent to philosophy and to the other arts. Texts include Eleonore Thon's Adelheit von Rastenberg, Gerhart Hauptmann's Bahnwrter Thiel, Arthur Schnitzler's Frulein Else, Franz Kafka's Das Urteil, Friedrich Drrenmatts Die Panne and Max Frisch's Andorra.
