In the course of this class you will become familiar with a range of German-langue media, follow current issues in depth, practice talking and writing about them with greater nuance and gain a greater understanding of contemporary German-language culture. You are expected to read German online news regularly throughout the semester. The syllabus is subject to change, since the actual content of the class will depend on the current issues that arise. At the end of the class you should be able to --recognize and situate major German-language media outlets and sources --talk about many of the current issues --write about complex issues with more nuanced vocabulary and style --practice how to evaluate and properly cite sources --analyze a media source more critically --have a better understanding of the different styles of German and American media --have a greater understanding of the German-language cultural context During the semester you are expected to --attend class and participate in all discussions --complete all assignments on time --read German-language online news at least every other day --ask questions whenever they arise
