This course provides support through a team-based approach for BHWELL scholars during field placement while highlighting techniques, skills, and evidence-based practices that students will need to function at a high level as a clinical social worker and behavioral health consultant in primary care settings, with emphasis on underserved populations and areas as defined by HRSA. Required seminar for BHWELL scholars on the integration of behavioral health and primary care. Course prerequisites are SOCW 515 and SOCW 553; or by permission of BHWELL Project Director. Telehealth & Clinical SW
Section Info:
Telehealth & Clinical Social Work: Telehealth, mobile technology, and digital communication are gaining widespread use in social work direct practice and can increase access to mental and behavioral health care. This 8-week course covers types of telehealth, ethics, professional standards and etiquette, online therapy tools, clinical skills, evidence-based practices, and telehealth policies. The strengths and limitations of these evolving technologies will be reviewed, and best practices for access, equity, digital health literacy, and cultural competence will be considered throughout. The course will include presentations, readings/video assignments, case studies, role-playing, progress notes, hands-on skills training, and a final project. This is a 2-credit hour course. The class meets the 2nd 8 weeks of the semester.

This course focuses on building students' skills in Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based method for talking with people who are ambivalent about change. This course differentiates the counseling method from other counseling approaches and teaches students the practice theory upon which the counseling method is built. Ample time is devoted to practicing skills via role plays. Skills developed include reflective listening skills, formulation of questions, and directive methods that are distinct in MI. Special attention is devoted to applying Motivational Interviewing with diverse populations and across varied target problems.

Academic Writing for the PhD Student The course is structured as a guided writing workshop experience. Each class session will consist of protected writing time, guided exercises to develop and practice new skills, and lecture/discussion to provide foundational knowledge in the conventions of academic writing. Concepts and skills covered in the course include the structure of academic articles, formulating a hypothesis or argument for a paper, synthesizing existing research for various purposes (literature reviews, systematic reviews, scoping reviews), language and conventions for academic writing, selecting journals for publication, responding to reviews, and building a consistent writing habit. Global Perspectives
Section Info:
OVERVIEW: Students will learn about social justice and health equity models in Brazil and the United States and have the opportunity to interact with Brazilian peers in online-classes and an on-site visit to Rio de Janeiro. This program is open to any registered UIUC student, Sophomore level or above. All students must complete the study abroad online application https://studyabroad.illinois.edu/ before being cleared to register for this course. These are the tentative dates: *March 23-May 29, 2026 (online classes). Travel to Rio, Brazil: May 18-May 28, 2026. May 29, 2026: all class online debriefing. *tentative online class week of March 9th for orientation and preparation of American students
