Section Title:
The Poetry of Mahmoud Darwish
Section Info:
This seminar examines the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish, the premier Palestinian poet whose work combines lyric intensity with historical consciousness, humanism, and spirituality. By closely examining certain poems, students will investigate how Darwish crafts poetry that embodies themes of homeland and exile, weaving together memory, myth, and personal reflection into a comprehensive exploration of identity, loss, belonging, and the Abrahamic faiths. This course situates his writing within the historical context of Arabic literature, the development of nationalism, and the enduring cultural significance of his work. The course is conducted in English and Arabic. Intermediate to advanced English and Arabic are required.
