Section Info:
This course introduces students to the diverse histories, cultures, and contemporary issues of the known as the “Middle East”. We begin by examining how the region has been defined, then explore its contributions to human civilization alongside modern social, political, cultural, and environmental developments and challenges. Yemen will serve as a case study throughout the course, with guest speakers providing firsthand perspectives on culture, activism, and current issues. Through multidisciplinary materials and these lived experiences and insights, students will critically analyze representations of the region, reflect on how their perceptions evolve, and consider how knowledge of the Middle East can be applied within their own fields and future careers. This course meets twice/week, with the option of virtual learning on Mondays. Additionally, students will meet online with peers from Yemen at least once per week – these sessions will be scheduled before 10:00 a.m at an agreed time to accommodate time zone differences. Students are also expected to complete weekly online activities that reinforce course themes and foster meaningful cross cultural dialogue. Together, these components ensure active participation in both local and global learning communities. Please email instructor with any questions. Class will be held in Coble Hall room 306
