Section Title:
Great American Cases
Section Info:
Great American cases is a lecture that covers great cases and trials in the United States, in chronological order and with context of how they shape the American legal tradition. A case will be assigned for each class, allowing students to gain skills in reading case law and primary legal documents. Cases will be briefed in the lecture, allowing students to learn more about black letter law in a variety of legal fields, focusing on constitutional law and criminal procedure. Students will be graded on the basis of a midterm and final that will be closed book, in person, multiple-choice scantron exam. The course will attempt to historicize important trends in US jurisprudence, illustrating what former president Barak Obama meant when he asserted: "The law is also memory; the law also records a long-running conversation, a nation arguing with its conscience.” In addition to learning more about historic US and Illinois cases, students will learn two crucial skills that transfer to law school if they choose to pursue the study of law. Students will practice reading cases and be able to self-assess their evaluations of the texts over the semester. Students will also be required to memorize case names, holding, rationale and dissents in order to answer multiple choice exams, simulating the black letter law retention skill which is necessary in law school and for the bar exam for admission to the practice of law.
Restriction(s):
