Credit: 3 hours.

This course surveys the history of gender formations in the United States to 1877. Although it pays some attention to manhood and masculinity, it focuses on the history of women from a variety of social groups and on gender ideas pertaining to women. Throughout, it considers the ways gender intersected with categories such as race and class as it placed women of different backgrounds in differential positions.

Description: This course surveys the history of gender formations in the social, political, and economic developments that shaped the United States up to 1877. It begins with colonial contact and examines the diverse and changing meanings of gender that molded people’s experiences before and after American independence. Throughout, the course pays particular attention to the ways gender intersected with race and class, positioning women of different backgrounds in distinct positions. The class meets three times a week (50 minutes), with Fridays devoted to analyzing primary sources written by, about, or for women in the past and secondary works by leading scholars of gender and women.
