With or Without Conscience: Morality in Literature, Film, and Theory This seminar explores conscience as a moral, psychological, and aesthetic agency at the center of modern literature, film, and theory. The modern conception of conscience can be traced to Kant, who places the burden of conscience squarely on the individual subject. This marks an important step of the Enlightenment; at the same time, it renders conscience a matter wholly absorbed by the subject. This becomes visible immediately in literary texts – most notably in Schiller, Kleist, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and others. Although conscience undergoes several reconfigurations, not least through Freud’s psychoanalysis, this does not alter its precarious status. Its limits and capacities continue to be tested in the avant-garde (Schnitzler, Kafka), the postwar period (Seghers, Arendt), and into the present (Glazer, Weber). We will examine both the workings and the breakdowns of conscience in narrative, drama, and film, paired with theoretical writings that conceptualize conscience in conversation with literary form. “This course will be taught by Dr. Philipp Weber, Max Kade Visiting Professor”
