Section Title:
Humor in German pop-culture
Section Info:
This course will look at what it means to be ‘humorous’ (including satire & irony) giving examples in German-language popular culture, including stories, cinema, television, stand-up, music, and YouTube. In particular, the course will analyze how humor is expressed within German popular culture in order to comment on society in a critical way. To put this another way, we will use German-language cultural works to explore the main question: What is the function of German popular humor? We will consider several related sub-questions: Is humor a “low form” of cultural representation? Is humor essentially derived from distain of or condescension toward others? the object of the joke? the BUTT of the joke, in English? This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for Western Literature and the Arts or Western Cultural Studies.
