Professional Seminar in College Teaching

Credit: 0 TO 4 hours.

Seminar on undergraduate pedagogy for new graduate instructors. Individual sections will focus on the teaching of film, literature, or rhetoric.

Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated by PhD students to a maximum of 8 hours as topics vary. Credit is not given for more than 8 hours, but course may be repeated for no credit. Prerequisite: Graduate standing in the Department of English or consent of instructor. Students needing the proseminar for their programs will be given priority enrollment.

SP26 ENGL 593 - Professional Seminar in College Teaching of Literature - Hina Nazar - This course prepares graduate students to be effective teachers in the undergraduate classroom by helping them develop syllabi, sample assignments, grading procedures, and other pedagogical tools in a series of hands-on workshops. Readings on pedagogical styles and challenges will supplement the primary work of developing a teaching portfolio, including a statement of teaching philosophy, that is expected to be helpful both internally (whilst teaching at UIUC) and on the job market. Ample attention will be given to the particular challenges of teaching at this particular historical juncture, when humanities’ enrollments are declining, students are becoming overly reliant on tools like ChatGPT, and the utility of higher education is questioned in oftentimes heated public discourse.
