SP26 ENGL 583 - Topics Writ Pedagogy & Design - Peter Mortensen - Writing Across the Curriculum - This seminar is a critical exploration of the modern writing across the curriculum (WAC) movement in U.S. higher education. We’ll begin with the “literacy crisis” of the 1970s that spawned WAC, study the movement's growth as universities increased their research portfolios in the late twentieth century, and consider WAC programs’ struggle to remain intellectually viable in the twenty-first century, as instructional responsibilities have shifted away from research-active faculty in many academic disciplines. The seminar will conclude by imagining what WAC programs could become in an era when generative AI tools are changing how disciplinary knowledge is discovered and communicated.
