SP26 ENGL 582 - Topics in Research and Writing - Charlesia McKinney - Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods - When you think of a "researcher", what image comes to mind? Which philosophies shape your approaches to research? What is the Institutional Review Board and does your research need their approval? What is coding and how does it aid qualitative data analysis? Contending with these questions and more, this introductory seminar centers Black, Indigenous, queer, and/or feminist epistemologies to interrogate colonial ethics within qualitative research procedures as a means of identifying intentional vs imprudent logics. Graduate student researchers, in the humanities especially, are often encouraged to “skip the method/ology section” of academic articles, which creates unfamiliarity and un/intentional contempt for the creative and intriguing processes of qualitative praxis. We will examine methods (material processes of gathering evidence) alongside methodologies (theoretical guides that conduct evidence gathering) to co-examine resources for sharpening and clarifying your individual research interests and projects. All disciplines are welcomed to enroll and as a reminder: this course is specific to qualitative methods, mixed-methods and quantitative methods will be referenced very lightly.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
