SP26 ENGL 380 - Topics in Writing Studies - John Gallagher - Social Media Research - How do people really use social media? And how can we study that? Students will learn how to conduct hands-on research into platforms such as (but not limited to) TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube. Together, we’ll analyze how users build communities, tell stories, and push back against algorithms, while exploring methods including digital ethnography (observation), discourse analysis, survey design, research designs, and interview techniques. These methods will help us study influencer culture, fandoms, content moderation, or viral trends. Consequently, students will gain practical research experience, receive one-on-one mentoring, and sharpen our academic and professional writing skills. No AI tool can compete with the research or writing students will produce in this class. The course culminates in a research project that prepares you for conference presentations, academic publication, or future careers in the media, communications, or technology sectors. If you’re ready to ask big questions about how the internet shapes identity, culture, and society, this course is for you.
