Section Title:
From Sijo to K-Pop: Song Lyric
Section Info:
This course is offered online via BTAA CourseShare and will be taught synchronously via Zoom by Prof. Young-mee Yu Cho at Rutgers University. If you’ve ever been curious about the poetic roots of K-pop lyrics or how traditional verse lives on in modern Korean music, this course offers an engaging introduction. The course explores sijo, a dynamic three-line poetic form that originated in the late Koryŏ dynasty and continues to shape contemporary Korean culture—from classical art songs to the lyrics of today’s popular music. Designed for students from a wide range of disciplines, the course traces the development of sijo through three main units: Unit 1 introduces traditional East Asian verse forms and situates sijo within Korean literary history; Unit 2 examines the structure and performance of sijo, including its musical aspects; and Unit 3 highlights the transformation of poetic traditions in modern Korean music, including K-pop. No background in Korean language or literature is required, as discussions will be based on English translations, though students proficient in Korean will be encouraged to read the original texts. This section is offered through the BTAA Course Share Program hosted by University of Rutgers, meets synchronously, and will be video-conference/Zoom/online taught for participating universities.
