Credit: 2 OR 4 hours.

Study of selected major philosophers, movements, problems, or topics in the history of philosophy.

Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated. Letter grading applies when offered for 4 hours of credit. For Stage 3 Philosophy PhD students this course is approved for S/U grading when offered for 2 hours of credit. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor for non-philosophy graduate students.

Topic: This course is a deep dive into the writings left behind for us by Hannah Arendt. We will be reading most of The Human Condition, The Origins of Totalitarianism, and Life of the Mind as well as some of her essays and other shorter readings. The aim is a comprehensive study of her approach to core philosophical topics, including human nature, morality, politics, modernity, and evil. This course is for Philosophy Stage III students only for a 2-hour credit. Grading will be Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory on the 2-hour credit.
