- Examines all the PHYSICAL aspects of books and how these inform us of the books' manufacture and place in a scholarly world. Covers all aspects of book production, from the earliest books to computers, and concentrates on their physical aspects. The course will look at all kinds of manifestations and features of codices that will useful in cataloging and bibliographical description, in reading scholarly bibliographies, in deciphering booksellers' catalogs, and in describing copy-specific information for finding aids. Particular attention will be paid to the graphic representation and visualization of information across media. Students will examine different approaches to the study of books and documents, including those of palaeography, diplomatics, bibliography, art history, musicology, textual criticism, digital humanities, and new media studies. - Note this 8-week course runs in synch with the first half of IS583 PBO. This course will explore the approximate 500 year history of the printed book in the West from Gutenberg to our digital contemporary with the aim of better understanding the shifting power and purpose of the printing press historically. We will read the work of book historians and bibliographers, examine the role of the printed book in specific epochs such as the Reformation and Scientific Revolution, and examine how print has been used for censorship and propaganda, as well as for the production of knowledge. Particular attention will be paid to the types of material books found in research libraries and university special collections. Graduate students with questions are asked to work with their advisor.
